FASHION AS A SOCIAL MIRROR: Focus on the 1950s (Cold War era)

TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2022, 2-4 pm
(in-person lecture) Suncoast Technical College campus, Sarasota, Florida

This is the second in a heavily illustrated lecture series offering a historical perspective about the ways fashion reflects the issues, beliefs, and art of its time.   While a survey of styles and influential designers is considered, the emphasis is on dress as a whole (e.g., including body image) and why things looked the way they did and what meanings they held. Why did we dress that way? This session focuses on the Cold War era (the time commonly thought of as the 1950s, with inclusive dates about 1947-1962). A great deal happened during this mid-century “Populuxe” (popular/deluxe) era, when new synthetic materials, space age ideas and the advent of teenage culture affected how people looked and behaved. As the lecture will no doubt bring up personal memories, a lively discussion period is expected.

Offered through Adult and Community Enrichment (ACE) at Suncoast Technical College, Sarasota Florida. Takes place on campus in Sarasota.
Fee: $19.00

SOULCOLLAGE JOURNEY: Giving Form to Our Inner Guidance

SATURDAY, MARCH 12,  APRIL 9, 2022
(in-person) Casa Nur (private studio), Englewood, FL

Are you hoping to be closer in touch with your own inner wisdom and spirit of guidance? And to do it in a creative, easy, almost magical way? SoulCollage® is an exciting and powerful process of working with visual images (cutting and pasting from printed photos--no particular skill, artistic ability or experience needed) and then using the cards to access information from your own inner self.  You develop both intuition and personal imagery by creating cards that function as a personal "deck” that can be used as a tool for individual exploration. The card-making is satisfying and fun (it is addictive!)—and it is a discovery in itself—but that’s only the first part; then you learn to do "readings," to explore what the cards you created have to tell you. The process is direct and delightful: certain images call to us and show us what they want us to know, and the readings take us to our deepest level of wisdom.

These workshops are suitable for both those new to the SoulCollage® and an opportunity for those who have worked with it previously to delve much deeper.  They take place at a private studio in Englewood, Florida in the open air if weather permits--if not, there is ample indoor space. All materials are provided. Location details provided with registration. (Note: if you have chosen not to be vaccinated, please wait until the Covid danger is fully passed.)

Come to one, two, or all three sessions--they do not depend on one another, but can build on one another beautifully.
All materials provided. Fee: $45 prepaid ($ assistance possible). Preregistration required.

ART STUDIO OPEN HOUSE
Saturday and Sunday, March. 19-20, 2022, 1-5 pm

Discover my world of EARTH BEINGS--come encounter them in person. You may be surprised and amused--you may look with wonder at these imaginative reconfigurations of everyday earth elements.  Learn about collecting and processing the materials, too.
Weather permitting, this will be outside in the open air. Refreshments, conversation and videos will be provided.  Contact me for further information and address.

WRITING FROM THE INSIDE: An Approach to Uncovering our own Creative Voice

online, MONDAYS, February 7, 14 and 28, 2022, 5-7 pm. EST, and

May 2, May 9, May 16

In this Zoom workshop we use the writing process to open ourselves to the richness of both our inner and outer worlds. Working from a variety of prompts (words, images, objects) and exercises, we attune ever-more deeply to our experience and environment, and access our inherent intuitive wisdom and creativity. We create a safe, playful space. The writing that emerges through the “freewriting” process may take many forms—autobiographical /personal, narrative description, poetry, or something totally surprising. (Other techniques may also be introduced.) The workshop is suitable for everyone (“writers” and “non- writers” alike), since it is focused on experience rather than product. We listen to/witness the words of the others in our group, not with the intent of critiquing what they have done, but to share and reflect back to each other what imaginative, nuanced, and wise people we are.

Offered through Adult and Community Enrichment (ACE) at Suncoast Technical College, Sarasota Florida. Enrollment fee to be announced. www.sarasotacountyschools.net/schools/ace

CREATIVE VISIONING: WRITING FROM VISUAL IMAGES
online, Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3   10am-1pm central time

In this online Zoom workshop, we use images (paintings, photos, patterns, etc.) to open ourselves to the richness of our inner experience, and the magic and profundity of our embodied world. The images serve as prompts for guided free-writing exercises that allow us to attune ever-more deeply to ourselves and our environment. Through color, texture, form, and evocative association, the images stimulate intuitive, non-linear ways of knowing. We allow the writing to take varying forms that show us what wants to emerge or come through. Well beyond narrative description, it may yield dialogue, poetry, or total surprises. We are often amazed at what flows through and onto the page.
Visual prompts work beautifully on Zoom, since the image fills the computer screen and when we look at it without distraction, it takes us deep inside. We are completely in our own space during the timed writing periods, and then come back together with the group. Then, in what becomes an intimate space, we listen to/witness one another’s words. We are not concerned with critique, but with reflecting our mutual discoveries and understanding what imaginative, nuanced, and creative people we are.
These sessions are suitable for everyone — “writers” and “non-writers” alike — since they are concerned with experience rather than product. We create a safe, supportive space where all contributions are valued.

Experimental Collage: Playing with Technique and Natural Materials
in-person class, Friday afternoons, May 6 and May 13, 2022

Suncoast Technical College campus, Sarasota, Florida

This is a hands-on class where students play and experiment with collage techniques to expand their sense of freedom and possibility. We work with a variety of materials, including paper, fiber, small found objects and elements of nature; and explore a variety of techniques, including photomontage, gel medium layering and embedding; and changing paper surfaces (through tearing, weaving, burning, Citrasolv ink manipulation). The class emphasizes intuition and discovery, and students learn to look at materials in their everyday environment (coffee filters, clothes dryer sheets) with new eyes of possibility. Collage—i.e., cutting, pasting and combining—is easy and satisfying. No previous knowledge or specific skills are required, although there will be ample avenues of discovery for even the most avid collager. Students will come away with both samples and finished compositions.

Offered through Adult and Community Enrichment (ACE) at Suncoast Technical College, Sarasota Florida. Enrollment fee to be announced. www.sarasotacountyschools.net/schools/ace
